Here is where God called Moses out of his comfort zone of being a shepherd to deliver the Children of Israel from Egypt. Having been kicked out of Egypt forty years prior to this for trying on his own power to help the Hebrew slaves, God is asking him to return. After he is out of his comfort zone as a prince of Egypt and there is now a price on his head, God is telling him to return. Even when the Hebrews were against him, God is telling him to go back and deliver them from their oppression in Egypt.
Moses used every excuse that he could to talk God out of using him for this job. Every excuse God met with and answer:
Who am I that Pharaoh would listen to? – I will be with you.
Who do I say sent me ? – IAM WHO I AM sent you.
What if they don’t believe me? – God turned Moses’ rod into a snake and back.
I can’t talk so good. – Then your brother Aaron will talk for you.
Moses was talking to a bush that appeared to be burning yet it wasn’t and the Person responsible for the burning bush said that He would go with Moses, yet Moses still tried to get out of it. God took his rod away, his protection from wild animals, his help in walking and climbing, his security and turned it into a snake. Can’t you just hear what Moses is thinking, “Great He just took my rod so I can’t crush the head of the snake. Now he wants me to pick it up by the tail. I’m going to get bit and die out here. Who in his right mid would pick up a snake by the tail.” Can you imagine his shock when he grab the tail and it turned back into a snake? Even after that Moses still tried to get out of going by the old “I can’t talk so good,” excuse, God gave him no way out by having his brother Aaron speak for him.
After running out of excuses Moses does what God asked him to do. With a new found CONFIDENCE that God will be with him and instructing him in what he is to say and do, Moses with his rod in hand set off to do what God had told him.
